WHAT IS MAKATON?
Makaton is a world-wide, multi-modal language programme that uses speech, signs and symbols to enable learners to improve on their language and communication skills. The signs are taken from British Sign Language and the symbols have been devised over time to be simple but convey the meaning of a word.

Makaton supports the development of essential communication skills. Not only does it encourage good attention and listening, turn taking, imitation and eye contact but it also is beneficial for early reading and writing skills and developing literacy.

Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Makaton helps aid people in their understanding of language. It helps to form and build interpersonal communication between people. It allows a user to create relationships and interact with others, thus reducing frustration. Makaton helps to take away the frustration of not being heard or understood and it enables people to connect and feel supported. It helps others recognise what the user is communicating, especially if speech attempts are unclear.

With Makaton, signs are used, with speech, in spoken word order. Signing gives a visual to help understand the word meaning. Symbols can be used for those who prefer not to sign.
